During the morning we’ll have private guided tours of this interesting Arts and Crafts house designed by architect Edward Ould. It was built as a home for the successful 19th century industrialist Theodore Mander and his family and was greatly influenced by William Morris and his contemporaries. The Pre-Raphaelite art collection that you will see round the house contains works by DG Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, Evelyn De Morgan and Millais. They also have works by the often overlooked Pre-Raphaelites: Lizzy Siddal, Lucy Maddox Brown and Simeon Solomon.
What the room guides don’t tell you is the story of the stained glass windows by Charles Kempe. In the afternoon we’ll have the opportunity to look more closely at these with special illustrated talks given by Adrian Barlow.
Refreshments can be taken in the Manders’ tea-room or you can bring a picnic to enjoy in the attractive Edwardian garden.
NB: For less mobile visitors, there is a short walk from the coach drop-off point to the Manor House and there are flights of steps inside. Most of the ground floor containing the principal collection is accessible and there is a photo guide available. The lecture room for Adrian’s afternoon talk is up a flight of stairs.
