Winchester Cathedral is a living monument to the heritage of England and is one of the most historically significant buildings in Britain. From the time of Alfred the Great until after the Norman Conquest, Winchester was England’s capital and the Cathedral was its royal chapel. Here much of England’s early history was based and is believed to be the burial site of twelve English kings.
We travel by coach direct to Winchester, where we will enjoy coffee and cake in the Cathedral Refectory (included). Our dedicated cathedral guides will take us on a journey of the building’s history through its art and architecture and their favourite stories. There will be a chance to visit Jane Austen’s grave and the Crypt to view Antony Gormley’s Sound II. After the tour, you may like to join Adrian Barlow for a closer look at the Victorian stained glass in the Choir and the Lady Chapel. Alternatively, you may like to see the treasures displayed in the new exhibition (entry fee) Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation, which includes the illuminated Winchester Bible. Please note that at 13:00 there will be a recital by Winchester College Music Scholars in the Quire. This is free to attend and donations are recommended. Please note that there is an approximately 6 minute walk from coach drop-off point to the Cathedral.
After free time for lunch, we will move on to Burghclere and to Sandham Memorial Chapel, home to a remarkable series of large-scale paintings by Sir Stanley Spencer – inspired by his experiences in the First World War. There is limited space in the Chapel and we anticipate dividing into groups for the guided talks. There is, however, ample to see in the gardens and the visitor centre whilst not on the tour. There are three stone steps with handrail to enter the chapel.

COST PER PERSON: £38.00 for National Trust Members (please bring your National Trust Membership Card or full admission will be payable); £46.00 for non-National Trust Members.

Pick-up points: Racecourse Park and Ride: 07:45, Royal Well Coach Station 08:00, Six Ways (on main road by entrance of St Edwards School) 08:15.

Our coach will return at approximately 17:30.
