Friends will see this important exhibition spanning the early 1860s to the late 1920s. In addition to bringing together Monet’s paintings of Giverny, it examines the role of gardens in the development of modern art across Europe and features other artists including Cezanne, Manet and Klimt. Working in modes as various as Expressionism, Intimism and Symbolism, avant-garde artists across Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries used gardens to play with colour, perspective, metaphor and emotion. “A garden is a complex of aesthetic and plastic intentions” declared the 20th century landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, adding that each plant was “a colour, a shape, a volume or an arabesque in itself”. But what happened when painters became gardeners, bringing their own sense of colour and composition? The result was great gardens in the case of artists such as Monet, with his vast horticultural knowledge, but also outstanding artworks in the pictures he and his peers painted of them.
