In 2021, Tewkesbury celebrates the 900th anniversary of the consecration of Tewkesbury Abbey. The present Abbey was founded in 1102 to house Benedictine monks and was near completion when consecrated on 23rd October 1121.

Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, the famous art scholar, described how Tewksbury Abbey quietly dominates the land and skyline with its long nave and tower, “probably the largest and finest Romanesque tower in England”. The Abbey’s social importance and influence can still be seen in the layout of Tewkesbury’s streets and buildings, including the Abbot’s Gatehouse, the Abbey Mill, The Vicarage and the Tudor-style dwellings in Church Street.

John Jeffreys will talk about the Abbey, its history and how the events of the last 900 years have influenced what we see before us now.
