D.W. Herdman moved to Cheltenham from the north-east in 1921 to take up the post of librarian-curator. He spent 30 years of his working life in the town and contributed a huge amount to the development of both the Art Gallery & Museum and the library service. This talk will focus on what is now the museum’s nationally important Arts and Crafts collection, which owes its existence and its character to Herdman’s vision and enthusiasm. It is a unique story of both public service and also serendipity and great enthusiasm.
Our speaker Mary Greensted is a freelance curator, lecturer, and writer who for many years was responsible for Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum’s nationally important Arts and Crafts Movement collection. She is a trustee of the Court Barn Museum and the Guild of Handicraft Trust based at Chipping Campden. She has written a number of publications on the Arts and Crafts Movement including books on Gimson and the Barnsleys; the Arts and Crafts Movement in the Cotswolds, and three catalogues on Cheltenham’s Arts and Crafts collections.
The buffet lunch is available from 12 noon. The talk will start at 1.15pm and finish by 2.15 pm. The cost including lunch is £15.00; for the talk only, it’s £8.00.
