We are now able to host a reception at lunchtime on Tuesday 29th November to celebrate the acquisition of one of the most significant paintings to be added to the collection for several years.

Friends will be aware that the acquisition in 2020 of the portrait by Angelica Kauffmann of John Rushout, 2nd Baron Northwick, was undertaken by a partnership of donors of which The Friends were significant players. Since The Wilson reopened in July the portrait has been on display in the Friends Gallery as part of an exhibition devoted to the story of Cheltenham. Lord Northwick’s own famous art collection, open to the public at his home, Thirlestaine House, made an important contribution to the history of 19th century Cheltenham.

The reception will give us the opportunity to thank those individuals and grant-giving bodies who made this possible, and to emphasise its significance for the town of Cheltenham. The story of its acquisition from a chance sighting, through much goodwill, to its arrival in Cheltenham, is in itself interesting.

The trustees would like to invite Friends to join us at The Wilson to celebrate and to listen to the speakers in the Friends Gallery explaining the acquisition and importance of the portrait, and to enjoy tea/coffee and cake afterwards in the cafe downstairs. We would like as many Friends as possible to be able to share the occasion.

However the reception will take place in the Friends gallery which has limitations on the number of people who are able to attend. Given the number of Donor Partners and their representatives involved, and an invitation to The Cheltenham Trust and Cheltenham Borough Council, there will only be a limited number of places available for Friends to book. Please book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

However, if there is sufficient interest from Friends, it is our intention to have the proceeds recorded and to make this recording available on a later date for those Friends who would wish to attend a later screening of this significant event.

Cost per person: £5 including tea/coffee and cake  Time: 1pm for 1:15pm
