According to the traditional Chinese calendar, which has a 12-year animal zodiac cycle, the Chinese year beginning in 2019 is the year of the Pig. It is also known as The Spring Festival so should prove a good celebratory date for Friends in 2019.
Chinese New Year in 2019 starts on Tuesday 5 February and, to mark the celebration, we will be running our first-ever tour of The Wilson’s Chinese treasures – including items not on display. The tour will be conducted by The Wilson’s Producer of Decorative and Fine Art collections, Kirsty Hartsiotis. Following the tour, we will have a delicious meal at the award winning 288 Bar and Wok, just a short walk from The Wilson.
During the tour, Friends will be able to look at a number of Chinese ceramics from the Berkeley Smith collection loaned to the museum from 1923, and bequeathed in 1955. Berkeley Smith also collected painted scrolls, including a number of portrait scrolls. Alongside the ceramics you’ll also be able to see behind the scenes including scrolls that depict members of the imperial family and high-ranking officials.
Passionate about Chinese cuisine, 288 Bar & Wok serves a delicious range of meals. Founded in 2005 by Jody and Pak Wai Hung, this restaurant has fast become a Cheltenham favourite and this year won the SoGlos Highly Commended Award Best Restaurant. Food options include beef, seafood, chicken and tofu. (Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free dishes are available on request).

11:15: Private Tour of Chinese artefacts.
12:30: Short walk to 288 Bar & Wok.

There are three payment options:
1. You can pay by credit or debit card, as well as by PayPal, using the PayPal option (default). If there are sufficient spaces still available this will automatically confirm your booking if the payment is accepted.
2. If you want to pay by cheque select the Off-line option from the payment methods but please send your cheque as soon as possible as your booking will not be confirmed until we have received the payment.
3. If you really don’t like filling in forms on-screen you can download a form, print it and post it with a cheque. A booking form can also be found in the Friends Newsletter (available January 2019).
