Unbuilt Bath, a talk with Julian Orbach, looks at what might have been in Bath. Georgian schemes for great classical additions to the town gave way to Victorian municipal set pieces. One of the boldest proposals, for a neo-classical centre dates from 1916. The twentieth century sought to replan Bath most thoroughly, and ultimately most destructively. The lecture takes the story from John Wood’s giant Royal Forum proposal of 1740 to the present day, the neo-Roman Colosseum suggested for Bath Rugby Club in 2024, showing that in Bath, nothing is ordinary.

Julian Orbach makes a welcome return visit to the Friends. An Author and Lecturer, Julian is a graduate in History and Italian from Magdalen College, Oxford.
On graduation he was employed as an architectural adviser to the Victorian Society from 1975-77. He then worked on the listing of historic buildings in England (and later in Wales) and wrote the Blue Guide to Victorian Buildings in Britain, (1987).
In 1993 he co-founded the eco-community at Brithdir Mawr, which aimed to promote eco-housing, sustainability and self-sufficiency. He is an honorary member of the Royal Society for Architects in Wales and, most recently, has been revising Nikolaus Pevsner’s Wiltshire volume in The Buildings of England series.
