In her new book, A History of Polar Exploration in 50 Objects: From Cook’s Circumnavigations to the Aviation Age, Anne Strathie includes two objects relating specifically to Wilson and others from expeditions in which he took part. She will talk about those and other objects which represent the continuum (of which Wilson is a key member) of those who attempted – long before members of the general public visited polar regions – to portray the previously unseen. Anne will discuss objects relating to Wilson and examine his place within a community which includes James Cook’s expedition artists, Arctic surveyors, panorama makers, early photographers, and filmmakers, like Herbert Ponting, whose work foreshadowed today’s polar documentaries and films.
Please note we have moved our talks at St Matthews to TUESDAYS.
