There are several ways you can help to preserve and extend the scope of The Wilson, Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum. No matter how big or small, your very welcome gift will fit into one of these categories:
A pecuniary bequest: this is a fixed sum of money decided by you.
It may be helpful to suggest the following words for a pecuniary legacy:-
“I GIVE to THE FRIENDS OF THE WILSON, CHELTENHAM ART GALLERY & MUSEUM of Clarence Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL50 3JT registered charity number 289514 the sum of £[ ] [for the general purposes of the Charity/or state purpose of gift]
and I DECLARE that the receipt in writing of the Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of this Charity shall be a sufficient discharge to my [Executors/Trustees] who shall not be required to see the application of the property or money concerned.”
A specific bequest: you can bequeath a specific item of value, such as a painting, a piece of furniture, property or shares. If you are considering leaving a specific work of art we would welcome an opportunity to discuss your plans with you before you commit them to a will.
A residuary bequest: this is the gift of the remainder of your estate or a share in the remainder of your estate after all payments, taxes and other bequests have been made.
A reversionary bequest: you can leave the capital value of your assets, including property and investments, to The Friends of The Wilson, Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum in the future. In the meantime someone else will enjoy the benefit of the income.
What to do
Gifts made to the Friends of The Wilson, Cheltenham Art Galley & Museum are free of inheritance tax, so do remember that your legacy should be given through The Friends. In order to leave a bequest to The Friends you, as the donor, must make a will or amend an existing will. To do this in a way which both reflects your intentions and is legally valid, you should consult your solicitor. We would be happy to talk further to you should you wish to proceed.
